SHELTER

Noel House a shelter for women in downtown Seattle asked if I could photograph the shelter for a fundraiser, this I gladly did pro-bono. I was thrilled to be invited into this women's shelter for a few nights and spent time photograph the women and then the beds as they waited for night to come. The women told me stories about themselves, their hardships, and there one missed step that spiraled them down. I realized how little it takes to change the course of one's life, and how hard it can be to get back on track. These photos of the beds show a sliver of life when you are homeless.

In the basement of the nondescript building the beds line up in a grid. You are allowed to keep a few bags on your bed during the day but that is all. The beds have a lonely feeling, as they are in constant transition and change as the women themselves who pass through. While in their possession, each woman takes pride in her bed and covers it with special blankets or pillows. This is a place for safety where these women can find compassion and dignity. These images of the beds give a breif moment of all these woman have to make home for the night. These bed have so many stores to tell just as the women.

BOOTSY HOLLER

Second, my friend and bike coach Angela Sherry introduced me to the work of Bootsy Holler. A Los Angeles based editorial and fine art photographer, Bootsy has created her own personal time machine by inserting herself in her old family photos, but not before painstakingly costuming and making herself up in period appropriate get up.

Her series, Visitor, takes the Zelig-ian fantasy but transports it to a personal and emotional place where we can visit those we loved, or never knew.

In my gallery, people are constantly questioning the use of photoshop, which is something I don’t really pay much attention to. There aren’t many photographers these days not using that or some other kind of digital intervention in one way or another. It's just another tool and when it works it’s great and when it doesn’t it sucks.

James ran these 4 images with the piece. Thanks to my friend Angela who introduced James to the Visitor piece.
