Finding Family with a Generation Jump

Here is a sample of one of my new pieces I've been working on . Can you find me in this image from the mid 1940's? This is my Grandfather Willie, my mother Virginia, little Charles and little Jane holding a pheasant out in front of a small prefab home in Richland WA.

I've been placing myself back in time in old family photos, I guess coming from a divorced family it makes me feel like we are all still together in someway.

Self Portrait 1936, Hurdland Missouri

As the keeper of all photos new and old I have a nice collection from my mother's side of the family. While exploring these image and the moment in time I think about what it would be like if I step into the photograph. With a similar style and look I have put myself in the photo to feel the experience of the moment with my family.

My grandmother Ruby had great style and was an amazing seamstress. This family trait skipped my mother and went straight to me. I do have dresses that Ruby made and wore and I have worn them on many occasions. Our figures are almost exactly the same. Though my grandmother died when I was in 1st Grade, I did live close to her and have always felt spiritually boned through our craft, hands and brain.

I want this image to explore time and blur the boundaries for the viewer. Working with a similar fashion look given by the time I pull clothes out of my own collection of vintage and new. Similarly I have tried to match the time and feel of the actual photograph, some soft grain and a brown tone to match the original.

Ruby & Willie by Bootsy Holler

Since my Grandmother’s death in 1978, the home they had shared remained virtually unchanged. Willie lived alone in the house using the basement, kitchen and bathroom, not touching any other rooms. This house was always a strangely beautiful environment in stasis to me and I felt the need to finally document it. I photographed each room, capturing all the details in the kitchen, living room, dining room, hallway, boys’ room, girls’ room, Ruby’s room, the downstairs TV room, and finally Willie's basement bedroom. During this process my Grandfather passed away and immediately the delicate home was torn apart and sold. As generations leave us, they take with them their environments. I used photography for what it does best: to document a place and time before it is gone.

These images are just a sampling of the many photos taken in Ruby and Willie’s home, located at 1824 Davison, Richland, Washington.

This first image has such a great mysterious feeling to it. I shot this up on Phinney Ridge in an apartment that had just been abandon by an 85 year old mother and her daughter. The building was being torn down and they were asked to leave. A favorite image of mine.

Frances and her letters

I went with my mother in law and her friend Susan to visit her sister in law, are you following this. Anyway Frances was an editor for a regional magazine in LA for many years and also worked with F. Scott Fitzgerald. The movie "Last Call" with Jeremy Irons as Fitzgerald had Francis visiting the set and helping with keeping the story real. We had tea and talked with Francis for about an hour. She was very gracious in letting me take a few images of her and her home. She is 93 and has a great spirit about her.

I really like this as a diptych of Francis and Letters.

Antigua

Photos from our trip to Antigua, an island in the Caribbean. I spent a week with my friend Aubbie and her sister Genieva at Aubbie's dad's Villa in Jolly Harbour. Then week two Seth showed up. We went for a few days to a fancy hotel called the Carlisle Bay. Photos at the link are; playing pool at the Watch Dog, and Seth and taking a little Johnny dog into get a look at with a vet. We or I thought the little dog was a stray down at Dark Wood beach but it turned she had an owner. Clyde who owns the bar on the beach at Dark Wood. When we came back with Johnny girl from the vet he had somehow acquired another little dog. A female which is good because so is Johnny and they don't need more unwanted animals on that island. Also Aubbie and I went swimming with the stingrays which was really cool.

Sustainable fashion

Working on this shoot to come out in Eliza Magazine Winter 09/10. Here is a sneak peak of one of my favorites.

What is Sustainability you might ask, well in a broad sense, it is the capacity to endure. For us humans that means the product has potential or long-term improvements in the wellbeing, which in turn depend on the wellbeing of the natural world and the responsible use of natural resources. For the fashion world think about making handmade products, or not shipping that garment to multiple manufactures or shipping a garment at all to get made. Also the fabrics and pieces that make that product where are they coming from and how are they made. Sometimes it is about less packaging, shipping, waste or reuse of a product. Like much of the jewelry we used in this shoot was reuse, taking an old object and making it cool or fitting of the present. More to come when the issue comes out.

I'm still working with my friends covering young magicians at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. I was backstage this time with Krystyn, hoops and knives and Janet Jackson music, Kyle and his dry humor, Farrell w/ her whips, hoops and yo-yo's and Hiro from Japan and his 1st place magic act. This dark backstage light is when shooting bands for 10
years comes in handy. If you don't know what the Magic Castle is check it out next time you are in Hollywood, that is if you can get in. This is a private club for members and their friends.

John Lithgow

I love getting to photograph great characters so when I was asked to shoot John Lithgow for a Venice Art mag called FORTH I was excited. I remember John in 3rd Rock from the Sun, a very funny sitcom and the movie Harry and the Henderson's. He is one of those faces that have been working TV and Movies for many years. I love his work and it was great to meet him.

Who knew that John is a portrait painter and a good one? I photographed John while he was painting and then he posed for a cover image for me. What a sweet guy. This is my favorite image.

Pony dog

Pony girl passed away on April 18th 2006.
Man I miss her, I would still be crying everyday if I would not have gotten Mouse dog.
I think Pony was about a year old here. I was living in Magnolia in a big house with an awesome backyard. Pony loved sticks and had some how cut her left eye.

I love this image of Pony dog. She is running, smiling and happy. Pony was never on a leash so as we ran down the street I held the camera in front of her to catch the energy. I had just bought an old touring camera that shoots a half a 35mm frame, so we were just playing around.
While I drove long distances Pony would sit with her back end on the seat, her front legs on the floor and her chin on the back of my seat. I shot this over my shoulder while I was driving East on I-90.

The HOPE image was shot in Eastern Washington, 2001 on a drive to visit my families in Richland. After crossing over the Columbia River on I-90 going East jump onto highway 243 South. Drive past Wanapum Dam and through the apple orchards and grape vines until you come apon a little town called Desert Aire. Off to the left you see the HOPE sign and to the right you see the tiniest chapel ever.

Finally a link to go see some of the images I shot in Argentina in Dec. 08.

Seth and I started out in Buenos Aires and then flew down to Patagonia to the town of El Calafate. In Calafate I photographed lots of dogs and glaciers. We then flew up to Punte Norte to hang out with the penguins and chill on the beach where I also shot a bunch of little campers. Then back up to BA to relax, eat and check out a soccer match. Amazing trip.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

A few of my favorite imagesd from around the city. Seth and I were down in BA staying in the Hollywood lofts in Palermo Hollywood, this is the area where the film and commercial studios and digital labs are. A very cool and hip area to stay.
Places of interest for us in Argentina were:
-perito moreno glacier down south
-peninsula valdes in the middle (penguins and whales)
and here are a few others . .
- iguazu falls
- payunia in mendoza
- colonia in uruguay
Argentina is so large it is hard to get around to every place you want to see.
Our friend Georgos took us to some amazing places to eat we may not have found on our own.
The first two palces were the best. Both in not so safe areas but fine if you have a cab straight to them. The Restaurant themselves are great people and great food. You must must call ahead. But remeber people eat after 8PM in BA so by 10PM the places are packed.
1) EL OBRERO: located in La Boca, the old port area of the city.
It’s the place where local people use to go. Now it’s famous, even
Bono had dinner there...but it remains the same place...the owner serves you.Reservations: recommended to make a reservation.

Address: Pedro de Mendoza y Caffarena, La Boca. 20 minutes from
Recoleta. You must get there in a taxi from the hotel. The area is
dangerous, the restaurant is not... Please go, you will love it!!!
Do not have sea food. You have to order the simplest argentinean
food here: steak and salad. The “tortilla española” is also the best
in town (it’s like a spanish omelett with potatoes and onion).

2) RESTAURANTE PAN Y TEATRO: my favorite! You have to get there in a
cab, it’s located in a residential old area, 20 minutes from
downtown. It’s for local people, very simple, an old man from the
neighborhood playing the piano, local food , much more
sophisticated than a steak. You have to order “La Picada” which is a
starter to share, the best ever.

I'm working on my new mail out promo piece and business card. People always ask me about my card because they have a great silky feel to them. I work with 4colorprint.com. I do the Silk card style but they have many more cool products like stickers and custom dye cuts. As a photographer I love the way the images look with this print job + I get my promos cut to a special size and scored for a great price so my pieces can not be standard.

From the series, Ruby & Willie
One of the many photos taken in Ruby and Willie’s home in Richland, Washington.
Since my Grandmother’s death in 1978, the home they had shared remained virtually unchanged. Willie lived in the basement and kitchen, not touching any other rooms. This house was always a strangely beautiful environment in stasis to me and I felt the need to finally document it. I photographed each room, capturing all the details in the kitchen, living room, dining room, hallway, boys’ room, girls’ room, Ruby’s room, the downstairs TV room, and finally Willie's basement bedroom. During this process my Grandfather passed away and immediately the delicate home was torn apart and sold. As generations leave us, they take with them their environments. I used photography for what it does best: to document a place and time before it is gone.

P1 in SF hangs "28"

Ten years ago I put up a show called Twenty Eight this piece was a self portrait of what I was going through at the age of 28. I sold many pieces from this series but never broke up the original which I later sold to a commercial real estate, long time friend of mine in San Francisco. But just recently Marty the owner had to move from a studio loft to a house and has chosen to let Project One or P1 a new gallery and lounge borrow the piece indefinitely.

Ironically they had there opening for P1 on my birthday in October which is also the month I showed 28 in 1998. I did not even realize the other month when this happened that it was a bit of an anniversary for the piece.

I ran across this shot I did when I was shooting for CIMS (coalition of independent music stores) 10 year anniversary party. This was a great set of singer/song writers all up on stage singing one after another. Amazing!

BANG BANG - Mouse trick

Mouse and I started to learn this trick last night for 15 minutes with treats. We did about 15 minutes in the morning and later this afternoon she did it for my friend Steven with 3 Bangs (the slow death) then I got her to do it in one Bang and so we recorded it.

GenLux Magazine - Origami

The new issue of GenLux Magazine will be out on the 13th of Aug, the issues theme is Tokyo. I was asked to come up with a concept to fit the theme. Huge Origami Cranes was one of my pitches. GenLux loved it and I swiftly turned to my friend Shepherd (a great Production Designer) to introduced me to an artist friend of his. Jess then taught me in a few hours how to make a crane. I went home and practiced so I wouldn't forget. Each night I pull out some cool paper and folded so it would become second nature. My new favorite Crane is the Meat Crane made from the newspaper ads that come each week showing all the prime meat cuts. I'll upload a pic for you tomorrow.

My sister Molly and I traveled to her friend Fred's place in Costa Rica so we could look for land. Fred has Kayak trips to go snorkel and anther trip we did called Caves and Waves. Club Fred sits up on a hill in the little town of Ojochal looking out to the beautiful Pacific Ocean. The King of Kong - A Fistful of Quarters DVD has been released. Seth Gordon Directed it and Ed Cunningham Produced. I helped out with a little video camera work and also did promotional images and personal support for Seth. This is a shot that was taken in Steve Wiebe's garage in Redmond, Washington.

If you didn't see the movie in the theatres it is a must buy, must see DVD. Fun for the the whole family.
